History - Main Roads WA
The current resources boom in WA has resulted in low unemployment rates and a significant lack of employees. As a result of the privatisation of civil construction during the 1990's, and the ensuing lack of investment in trainees, the civil construction industry has an ageing technical workforce and faces strong competition in attracting young people to the industry.
Workforce planning within the civil construction industry highlighted the fact that they have an ageing workforce which is on the brink of retirement, and the need to invest significantly in trainees.
There are many young people living in regional areas who have been overlooked in the current boom, who have been unable to secure employment due to a range of disadvantages, and as a result of their high level of support needs. One of the best ways of addressing social disadvantage is by creating opportunities for employment, however many disadvantaged young people are not job ready. To simply pick them up and place them in a job is ineffective, as without the holistic support and resilience skills to handle the working lifestyle, they are unlikely to last the duration of their traineeship.
It was out of this workforce planning and the understanding of the needs of regional young people that the idea for the ROADS Foundation was born.
The ROADS Foundation was established in November 2006 to address workforce shortages in the civil construction industry by developing, coordinating and facilitating traineeship programmes for regional young people in civil construction.
ROADS is a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. ROADS is registered as a not-for-profit charitable institution.
