A career in civil construction has great opportunities.
Trainees in the two year civil construction will complete a TAFE Cert II or Cert III in one of the following areas, depending on what is available:
- -General Civil construction
- -Road Construction and Maintenance
- -Bridges
- -Pipe laying
- -Plant operation
- -Trenchless technology
- -Bituminous surfacing
Most of the learning will be on-the-job with a few weeks a year spent in the classroom. Once your traineeship is completed, there are all kinds of future opportunities you could pursue.
The ROADS Foundation Trainees' Support Coordinator will make sure trainees are ready to start work, and provide all trainees with a specific induction training that covers aspects of;
- -General work and personal development skills;
- -Budgeting and looking after your money;
- -Interview Preparation
- -Knowing your rights and your responsibilities as an employee;
- -Information about the Certificate in civil construction
- -Career opportunities in civil construction;
In addition all trainees will be linked into the online Peer Support Network and regional Mentor Support Network immediately following induction.
Peer Network
The ROADS Foundation undertook a survey of trainees involved in the Kimberley Pilot Project and found that trainees wanted to be able to communicate with each other, particularly as they were often placed in regions. It is for this reason that ROADS has designed the web-based Peer Network where trainees can communicate with each other online.
Mentor Network
The ROADS Foundation has established a Mentor Network throughout the communities and regions where trainees will areworking who are able to meet the trainees' support needs by:
Providing intensive support during the first 3-6 months around emotional and social needs and where needed making referrals to additional services for specialised support.
